First Impressions – Dirt Components Thumper Carbon Fat-bike Wheel Set

Product Spotlight: Dirt Components Thumper Carbon Fat Wheel Set
By Dave Krueger

Carbon wheel set you say? I got an email from Sven just before I headed up to Cable, WI for the Birkie. There were certainly other words in the email, but all I remember seeing in the email was “carbon wheel set” and the possibility of it hanging out on my fat-bike for a few weeks. The gist of my response to Sven was, “yeah, I’ll take that off your hands.” I like carbon fiber. Perhaps a little too much.

We snuck out the back door and made the hand-off in the parking lot. Nobody was the wiser to the acquisition of my new carbon test subject. The gods also showed their favor in that I had room in my car to bring them home – although it was close…

dirt-components-thumper-fat-bike-wheel-set3My first impression of the Thumper wheel set is that it is nice. There is no doubt they are light and no doubt they look good. I set up my test subjects up tubeless – as they came pre-taped and ready for a valve and sealant. As I am typing this, the Thumpers have been attached to my bike for about a week. They will go everywhere my bike goes for the next six weeks or so. I’ve already taken them out on a few good rides, but there are many more hard-ridden miles in the Thumper’s future.
